Fish-scale Jewellery
The use of fish-scale in craft products in Thailand dates back over 40 years and is completely odourless.
Fish scale from sea bass and other common species are obtained from the local port by the craftswomen as a waste product of the fishing industry.
The fish scales are thoroughly cleaned before being dyed and then used in combination with real crystal and silver to make striking pieces of jewellery.
This beautiful floral jewellery has proven highly popular in Thailand, especially for the annual Loy Kratong festival. During this festival people launch tiny boats decorated with flowers, candles and incense into the rivers, canals, ponds and the sea to wash away bad thoughts from the past and to make new wishes for the future.
Love and flowers are central to Thai society, and a more modern-day celebration, at which time this jewellery has proven popular, is Valentine’s day, when romantics buy the special person in their lives pieces of this stunning fish-scale jewellery.
The participants of this livelihood project are now offering the highest quality pieces of Fishscale jewellery to new markets in the west.
